Woolwich Wild Novice C Wrapup
The inaugural Novice C season started with a twelve game losing streak and ended with silver at the Provincials.

That’s the kind of year it was for 2012-2013 Woolwich Novice C.

Difficulty putting the puck in the opposing net and keeping the puck out of their own net led to some lopsided scores at the beginning of the year. The first tournament in late November produced the first win of the year with goals from Haylee, Maggie, Taylor, Amy and Carly. In Stratford, Maggie and Maddy took over the goaltending tandem and wins started to materialize.

With regular season wins over Stratford and Waterloo, confidence was high at the Woodstock tournament in January. Woolwich earned two wins and two ties before losing to a strong Chatham team. Annabel and Josie notched their first goals of the year in Woodstock. The team was pleased to be awarded silver medals.

Woolwich finished the season with only one loss in its final seven regular season games. Success was realized in the playoffs by beating Waterloo two games to one in a low scoring first round. Strong defensive performances from Kate and Teesha kept the goals against at less than a goal a game.

The final tournament in Durham West proved to be a good warm-up to Ottawa. Strong defence from Brooke and call-up Avery, as well as a momentum changing goal in the semi-finals by Payton, took the team to the finals. Again a silver medal as the Wild could not solve the Gloucester goaltending.

With no expectations the team travelled to Ottawa to compete in the OWHA championships. Woolwich was perfect in the round robin defeating West Northumberland and the tournament favourite Sault Ste Marie. Two more wins over Ilderton and Sarnia advanced them to the Championship game. This time the Sault proved to be too much and Woolwich skated away with Silver Medals.

The girls will remember this season with pride as they hold their heads high viewing the OWHA championship banner hanging from the rafters at the Dan Snyder arena in Elmira. Congratulations on a terrific season girls!
